Imagine that you are in a tunnel that is so dark you can barely see, and so small that you can not stand. The only way for you to move around is to crawl on your hands and knees. Now imagine that you have to push and pull large wagons full of heavy rocks, up hill, while still crawling. What if you had to do that all day instead of going to school, or playing with your friends? Long ago there were children who did this every day in underground mines!
Unfortunately, many children your age were made to work at dangerous jobs like this until the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 was passed into law. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 was a major step in protecting children from jobs that put them in danger. Thankfully, more laws were created that began to protect children even more, and now children in the United States do not have worry about being put to work in such a terrible place.
However, there are also other laws that have been created to protect you and the people in your community. There are many different types of law. Some laws only exist in certain states, while some laws are the same throughout the entire country. You might be asking yourself, "what are laws?" and "where do laws come from?"
